Perpetual DEX Beginner's Guide: Leverage, Fees, Funding, and Liquidation
What is a Perpetual DEX?
A perpetual DEX is a platform where you trade perpetual contracts from a self-custody wallet. You connect your own wallet, post margin, and choose a long or short position without first placing all of your funds under the long-term custody of a centralized exchange.
Decentralized does not mean lower risk. Wallet approvals, smart contracts, oracle prices, market liquidity, funding, and liquidation rules can all change the outcome of a trade.
If this is your first perpetual DEX trade, do not start by comparing maximum leverage or rewards. First verify the official domain and make sure you understand the position size, estimated costs, and liquidation price. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into a trading website, and begin with a small test amount.

Understand how a platform completes a trade
The main difference between perpetual DEXs is not just the headline fee. You also need to understand how orders execute, where liquidity comes from, and how holding costs are calculated.
Order-book platforms
Orders match against bids and asks, with a workflow similar to a professional derivatives exchange. Check market depth, maker and taker fees, funding, margin mode, and liquidation rules. Hyperliquid and dYdX both require users to understand order-book execution and margin management.
Liquidity-pool platforms
Trades execute against protocol liquidity and may use oracle prices, price-impact rules, borrowing fees, or funding. GMX and Gains Network do not use identical fee models, so review each official trade ticket separately.
Choosing a platform
For a beginner, the better platform is usually not the one with the highest leverage or largest reward. It is the one that clearly shows position size, fees, price impact, and liquidation price before you confirm.

Concepts that affect your PnL
1. Leverage
Leverage lets a smaller amount of margin control a larger position. A $1,000 margin position at 2x controls $2,000, while the same margin at 10x controls $10,000. Higher leverage reduces the distance to liquidation and makes fees and price movement more significant.
2. Margin and liquidation
Initial margin is the capital required to open a position. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep it open. Liquidation can occur when account equity falls below the platform requirement, and the effective liquidation price may move as fees accumulate.
3. Funding and borrowing costs
Funding generally transfers value between longs and shorts to help keep perpetual prices close to spot. Some pool-based platforms also charge borrowing fees. The rate and settlement interval vary, so use the live interface rather than assuming a universal eight-hour schedule.
4. Slippage, price impact, and depth
Slippage is the difference between the expected and executed price. Price impact can come from liquidity or position imbalance.
- On order-book platforms, execution depends mainly on market depth and order size.
- On liquidity-pool platforms, oracle pricing, pool state, and price-impact rules may also matter.

Leverage alone does not define risk. Two positions using 5x leverage can have very different outcomes depending on position size, stop distance, volatility, and holding time.

- Increasing size after a loss in an attempt to recover immediately.
- Having no invalidation or exit condition.
- Ignoring trading fees, funding, and borrowing costs.
- Skipping a small end-to-end deposit, trade, and withdrawal test.
A stop order also cannot guarantee the expected execution price. Liquidity, slippage, and network congestion still matter.
Costs that appear after you trade
- Trading fees: maker and taker fees, or open and close fees.
- Funding: periodic payments between long and short positions.
- Borrowing fees: holding costs used by some pool-based venues.
- Price impact and slippage: especially important for larger orders.
- Network fees: depend on the chain and transaction complexity.
- Liquidation and execution costs: may reduce remaining collateral during a forced close.

- Exit plan: how will you stop, reduce, or take profit?
- Liquidation distance: is liquidation too close to the current price?
The purpose of a plan is not to guarantee a correct forecast. It prevents you from changing the risk boundary only after the market moves.
Do not rush into complex strategies
Funding arbitrage, basis trades, and grid trading can look more neutral than a directional leveraged position, but they still carry execution, liquidity, basis, smart-contract, cross-chain, and platform risk.
A better sequence for a new perpetual DEX user is:
- Understand margin, funding, and liquidation.
- Complete one small position from opening through closing.
- Record actual fees, slippage, and holding costs.
- Study multi-venue or automated strategies only after consistently following a basic risk plan.
No strategy should be described as guaranteed, stable, or low-risk income.
Risks that do not appear in the headline
Technical risks
- Smart-contract vulnerabilities can lead to loss of funds.
- Oracle failures can contribute to incorrect pricing or liquidation.
- Network congestion can prevent timely position management.
- Wallet mistakes or malicious approvals can expose assets.
Market risks
- Extreme volatility can move prices before an order executes.
- Thin liquidity can increase slippage or prevent an orderly exit.
- Cascading liquidations can amplify market moves.
- Regional or frontend access can change without altering the underlying protocol.
Take the first weeks slowly
Week one: understand the workflow
- Read the official documentation for the platform you plan to use.

- Run a paper check with fee, funding, and liquidation tools.
- Write down the entry, exit, and maximum acceptable loss.
